When Did I Stop Asking Myself What I Want?

There are so many roles we move through in life. You become someone’s daughter, perhaps someone’s partner, mother, employee, boss, caregiver, friend.

None of these identities are bad. In fact, some of them may be the most meaningful, love-filled parts of your life. But every role comes with a quiet list of questions.

What do they need?
Where do they need to be?
What does my boss expect from me?
What do the kids need today?
What does my partner want?
What needs to get done?
What have I forgotten?

Before you know it, your days can become a long series of responding. Meeting needs. Keeping things moving. Being the reliable one. The capable one. The one who remembers, organises, comforts, fixes and holds it all together.

You might be brilliant at it.

You might even take pride in it.

But somewhere along the way, a question can get lost in all the noise.

What do I want?

Not what should I want. Not what would make everyone else happy. Not what makes the most sense on paper.

What do I want?

For many women, that question can feel surprisingly difficult to answer. Not because we do not have wants, dreams or desires, but because we have become so used to looking outwards that we have stopped checking inwards.

We know everyone’s favourite meals. Their routines. Their worries. Their plans for the weekend. We know what needs doing at work and what needs sorting at home.

But if someone asked us what would make us feel more like ourselves again, we might not know where to begin. Perhaps that is why certain seasons of life feel so emotional.

Like choosing a new home. On the surface, it can seem practical. A move. A new postcode. A list of things to pack, arrange and decide. But underneath it, there can be something much deeper happening.

You are choosing what you want around you.
You are deciding what feels good.
You are noticing what you want to bring with you.
You are realising what no longer fits.

Maybe it is not really about asking, “What should my next chapter look like?” It is about asking, “What do I want my next chapter to feel like?”

More peaceful?
More spacious?
More joyful?
More yours?

You do not have to have all the answers straight away. You do not need to strip back every layer of who you have been or make some enormous, life-changing decision overnight.

You can start with awareness.

Notice the moments when you automatically say yes, even when something in you wants to say no.

Notice when you feel drained, resentful or disconnected.

Notice the little flickers of excitement that you brush aside because they seem impractical, selfish or unimportant.

Then pause.

Give yourself a moment before responding. A moment before filling the silence. A moment before doing what you have always done.

That pause is powerful. It is where you begin to hear yourself again.

From there, healing can begin.

Not in a dramatic, perfect way. Just gently. By remembering that your needs matter too. That you are allowed to want things. That you are allowed to change your mind. That the version of you who has always been there underneath the roles deserves your attention as well.

Little by little, you begin becoming.

Not somebody new.

Not somebody selfish.

Just more of yourself.

Maybe coming home to yourself does not begin with some enormous life-changing decision.

Maybe it begins with a question.

What do I want?

hen giving yourself enough quiet to hear the answer.

You may be surprised by who has been waiting underneath all that noise.

There you are. 💗
