What Is All This Talk About the Nervous System?

Lately it seems like everyone is talking about the nervous system.

You hear phrases like dysregulated nervous system, fight or flight, trauma response and regulation tools everywhere.

It has almost become a buzzword.

So many women I speak with ask me the same question:

What does that actually mean?

Let’s start with the basics.

Your nervous system is the communication network between your brain and your body. It is constantly scanning your environment and asking one simple question:

Am I safe right now?

If the answer is yes, your body relaxes. You breathe more deeply. Your thinking becomes clearer. You can connect with people and respond calmly to situations.

If the answer is no, your body shifts into protection mode.

Your heart rate increases. Your muscles tense. Your brain begins looking for danger.

This response is incredibly intelligent. It is designed to keep you alive.

The problem is that your nervous system cannot always tell the difference between a true threat and the many smaller stressors we experience in daily life.

How the Nervous System Becomes Overloaded

When people hear the word trauma, they often think of major life events. But the nervous system is shaped just as much by what we might call small “t” trauma.

These are the everyday experiences that slowly teach the body to stay on alert.

  • Being dismissed when you speak up.

  • Growing up in an environment where emotions were not safe

  • Constant pressure to perform or succeed.

  • Years of holding everything together for everyone else.

Even subtle experiences like microaggressions, criticism or feeling unseen can teach the nervous system that the world is unpredictable.

When those experiences accumulate over years, the body adapts.

  • It learns to stay prepared.

  • To stay vigilant.

  • To stay on guard.

Over time, that state of alertness can become the body’s new “normal.”

I sometimes joke with my clients that when this happens, the nervous system becomes a little bit like the Ghostbusters scene where the toaster starts dancing on the counter.

Your system is just… toast.

Everything sets it off.

  • A stressful email.

  • A difficult conversation.

  • A long to-do list.

Your body reacts as if something serious is happening, even when it’s just everyday life.

What a Dysregulated Nervous System Feels Like

When the nervous system has been running on high alert for a long time, the symptoms often look like this:

  • You feel overwhelmed easily.

  • You snap at people you love, even when you don’t mean to.

  • You feel constantly tired, but you can’t seem to relax.

  • Your mind races, especially at night.

You may feel anxious, irritable, or emotionally drained. Many women assume these reactions mean something is wrong with them. In reality, it usually means their nervous system has been working overtime for years.

What a Regulated Nervous System Looks Like

When the nervous system begins to settle, life starts to feel very different. You still experience stress — that’s part of being human — but your body no longer stays stuck in a constant state of alarm.

  • You can pause before reacting.

  • Your breathing slows more naturally.

  • Your mind feels clearer and less chaotic.

  • You recover from stressful moments more quickly.

And many women notice something else that surprises them. They begin to feel like themselves again. Not a brand-new version of themselves, but the person who was there before years of stress and pressure piled up.

A Few Simple Ways to Begin Calming the Nervous System

The good news is that the nervous system can learn safety again. Small, consistent practices can help the body move out of survival mode and back into regulation. Simple things like slowing your breathing, taking short pauses during the day or using tools like EFT tapping can signal to the body that it is safe to relax.

The key is repetition.

The nervous system doesn’t change overnight, but it can shift surprisingly quickly when you begin working with it instead of pushing against it.

Learning How This Works

Understanding the nervous system can change the way you see yourself. What once felt like personal shortcomings often turns out to be a body that has simply been under too much pressure for too long.

This is exactly what I’ll be talking about in my upcoming masterclass.

We’ll explore why high-functioning women often become exhausted, what a dysregulated nervous system really looks like, and how the body can begin learning safety again.

If you’ve ever wondered why you feel so tired even though you’re doing everything “right,” this conversation may offer some answers.
