The Weight You Were Never Meant to Carry

Have you ever watched The Biggest Loser? There was one exercise that has stayed with me for years.

After contestants had lost a significant amount of weight, the trainers filled a backpack with the exact amount they had lost. If they had lost 30 pounds, they carried 30 pounds. If they had lost 50 pounds, they carried 50 pounds. Then they were asked to walk up a hill. The point wasn't to make them suffer but to help them feel how much lighter life had become.

Many of them were shocked, they had forgotten how heavy that weight had been until they were asked to carry it again.

Watching that exercise made me wonder...

How many of us are carrying weight we can't even see?

Not physical weight.

Emotional weight.

Every disappointment you never talked about.
Every time someone dismissed your opinion.
Every relationship where you felt unseen.
Every time you had to be the strong one.
Every criticism you believed.
Every heartbreak.
Every betrayal.
Every responsibility you carried because no one else would.
Every time you swallowed your words instead of speaking them.

One experience by itself may not seem that heavy, but life doesn't hand them to us one at a time. It stacks them. One after another. Until one day you wake up exhausted...

...and you don't know why.

I remember a season of my own life when I felt exactly like that. I often describe it as standing in a three-foot hole. Logically, I knew all I had to do was climb out. But I couldn't.

I wasn't lazy.
I wasn't weak.
I wasn't broken.

I simply didn't have the energy. I had been carrying far too much for far too long.

Here's what I've come to believe. Our nervous system is incredibly wise. When something hurts us, it protects us. It adds another layer after layer of:

Caution
Self-protection
"Don't let that happen again."

Those layers once served a purpose, helped us survive.

But over time... they begin to feel like carrying a backpack filled with rocks.

Imagine if every painful experience added just one pound.

A divorce
A betrayal
Being told you weren't enough
Years of people-pleasing
Always putting yourself last
Feeling responsible for everyone else's happiness

Maybe it's only one pound each. But after years... you're carrying fifty or more of emotional weight.

No wonder you're exhausted.

The beautiful part is this, you don't have to throw the backpack away all at once. Healing doesn't happen by emptying it in one day. It happens one emotional stone at a time, one layer at a time. One gentle choice at a time.

Every time you release one old hurt...
Every time you let go of one old belief...
Every time you stop carrying something that was never yours...

your backpack becomes lighter.

And so do you.

Maybe that's why you've been so tired, you've simply been carrying more than anyone was ever meant to carry.

And maybe... it's time to put some of it down

It's time to find your way home.
