Release Your Magic: Break Free from Playing Small
For generations, women have been subtly (or not so subtly) conditioned to play small. We’re taught to be agreeable, to avoid ruffling feathers, to stay in the background while others take the spotlight. We hear it in the messages passed down from childhood: Be nice. Don’t be too loud. Don’t brag. Make sure everyone else is comfortable. And before we even realize it, we’ve become masters at shrinking ourselves, dimming our light so that others don’t feel uncomfortable.
But here’s the truth: Playing small doesn’t serve you. And it certainly doesn’t serve the world.
Why Do We Dim Our Light?
The habit of playing small is deeply rooted in both societal expectations and personal experiences. Many women have been praised for their selflessness but criticized when they take up space. We learn early on that being too bold, too confident or too ambitious can invite judgment or rejection.
Over time, this conditioning creates patterns that hold us back:
We hesitate to speak up in meetings, relationships and social circles.
We downplay our accomplishments instead of owning our success.
We second-guess our ideas and dreams, wondering if we’re “good enough” to go after them.
We put others’ needs before our own, forgetting that we deserve joy, too.
The Cost of Playing Small
Every time we hold back, we deny ourselves the opportunities, experiences, and fulfillment that we deserve. We stay in jobs that don’t excite us, in relationships that don’t nourish us and in routines that drain us. We trade our magic for safety—and in doing so, we deny the world the brilliance that only we can offer.
How to Reclaim Your Power
Breaking free from this pattern doesn’t happen overnight, but small, intentional steps can create a powerful shift. Here’s where to start:
1. Recognize Where You’re Holding Back
o Ask yourself: Where am I making myself smaller? Is it in conversations, at work or in personal relationships? Awareness is the first step to change.
2. Reframe Your Narrative
o Start telling yourself a new story: I am worthy. My voice matters. My dreams are valid. Write it down, repeat it, believe it!
3. Take One Bold Step Today
o Say yes to something that excites you.
o Speak up in a meeting or conversation.
o Share your wins without downplaying them.
o Set a boundary that protects your energy.
The world needs your voice, your ideas and your presence. You were never meant to play small—you were meant to shine.
