You Didn't Choose to Shrink, You Learned How to

📝 You Didn’t Choose to Shrink—You Learned How

Women don’t wake up one day and decide to become smaller.

It happens slowly. Quietly. Over time.

In moments.

Moments where it felt easier to stay quiet than speak up.
Moments where keeping the peace mattered more than saying what was true.
Moments where something didn’t feel right… and you let it go.

Because it felt safer.

Shrinking is something you learned.

You learned how to read a room.
You learned how to soften your voice.
You learned how to adjust, accommodate, and adapt.

You learned how to protect yourself.

Women shrink in different ways.

Sometimes it’s obvious. Sometimes it’s so familiar you don’t even notice it anymore.

  • In relationships — staying quiet to avoid conflict, criticism, or emotional backlash

  • In conversations — holding back opinions, downplaying ideas, not taking up space

  • Financially — saying no to yourself, not because you want to, but because you have to

  • Socially — not going out, not participating, slowly pulling back from life

  • Emotionally — carrying things alone, not expressing what you really feel

  • In your body — feeling tension, hesitation, that quiet sense of “this isn’t right”

For me, it showed up in ways I didn’t question at the time.

As a single mom with three kids, there were years where I simply couldn’t afford the life I wanted. I didn’t go out. I didn’t do things for myself. I told myself it was just how it had to be.

And in many ways, it was.

But over time, that became more than circumstance. It became a pattern.

A quiet shrinking of what I allowed myself to want.

In other areas of life, shrinking can look different.

It can look like staying in a relationship where you’re not treated well, because pushing back feels harder than staying quiet. It can look like second-guessing yourself after being told, over and over again, that your experience isn’t valid.

It can look like not even recognizing what’s happening… because it’s been happening for so long. It is your normal.

There’s also a bigger layer to this.

Women have learned, over generations, how to stay safe in a world that hasn’t always made that easy.

You learn to be aware of your surroundings.
You learn what feels safe and what doesn’t.
You learn how to move, speak, and exist in ways that avoid attention you don’t want.

None of that is imagined.

It’s lived. And then, at some point… something shifts.

Slowly. You feel it.

A moment that sits heavy in your body.
A comment that lands differently.
A situation that doesn’t feel as easy to brush off as it once did.

You can feel the hesitation. The tightening. That quiet internal reaction that says… something’s off.

That moment matters! That’s where awareness begins. Once you feel it, you don’t go back the same way.

Shrinking is often a nervous system strategy. It’s your body choosing what feels safest based on what it has learned. But what your body has learned… it can also learn differently.

This isn’t about forcing yourself to be bigger, louder or more confident overnight.

It’s about noticing.

Noticing where you hold back.
Noticing what doesn’t feel right.
Noticing the moments where you override yourself.

And then, gently… choosing something different.

A pause before saying yes.
A breath before responding.
A moment of checking in with yourself.

This is how it begins.

Not by changing everything at once.

By creating space.

You didn’t choose to shrink.

You learned how.

And that means you can learn something new.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stretched or like something just isn’t working anymore, that’s a place to begin.

I’ve created a simple tapping series to help you start calming your system and working with overwhelm in a different way.

You don’t have to stay small.

And you don’t have to figure it out alone.
